Phantom sports #1: long-distance running

Welcome to the first edition of the Phantom Sports series, which will periodically explain each sport to you in more detail in terms of the advantages of using the Phantom Training Mask. As a 'special feature' at the end of each article you will find interviews with our Phantom Athletes from the relevant sport, who will tell you about their individual stories with the Phantom Training Mask and their experiences, what advantages they have achieved through it and let you in on it or benefit from another training tip.

Enough of the introductory words: Let's get started!!!

Today's issue of Phantom Athletes focuses on running, more specifically the long distance. This includes all runs from 2000 meters up to the marathon distance of 42.195 km. The first historically documented races of this kind took place in ancient Greece; mentions of them can be found in Homer's great epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, among others. Today, the most famous and prestigious long distance is probably the marathon, which Pierre Coubertin first introduced to the modern Olympic Games in 1896 and which is held all year round all over the world.

Physiology and energy supply over long distances

Due to the long duration of such runs, the body is not able to function by maintaining anaerobic lactate fermentation, as is the case, for example, with sprinting. Instead, energy is provided exclusively aerobically, initially via glucose oxidation, but after a period of around 2 minutes lipolysis begins, the proportion of which in the energy supply increases continuously until it dominates after around 90 minutes of exercise, as this is where the glycogen stores are are usually used up.

The oxygen requirement also increases because lipolytic energy provision uses significantly more O2 than glycolysis. From the point of lipolysis alone, it is not uncommon for the aptly named “hitting the wall” phenomenon to occur, which is also known in German as the “man with the hammer” (and this is not about CrossFit). This manifests itself in sudden, extreme tiredness, dizziness or even loss of consciousness.

The reason for this, as already mentioned, is, among other things, the sudden, significantly increased oxygen requirement and the resulting O2 deficiency, which means that energy supply can no longer be guaranteed.

This is one of the points where the Phantom Trainingmask can offer a significant performance advantage. On the one hand, regular training reduces the oxygen requirements of the respiratory muscles. The O2 consumption of these drops, which means that a larger amount of oxygen is available for glycolysis and later lipolysis. In this way, the oxidation of glucose can take place more effectively in advance, which leads to more energy and a boost in performance in terms of running speed, etc. Furthermore, with lipolysis there is a risk of falling into a lack of oxygen, i.e. literally “running into the wall”. lowered. This effect is also supported by the fact that the volume of oxygen that the performance muscles are able to absorb from the blood is also increased.

Another point in which the Phantom Training Mask can support you in the long distance range is mental strength, which can be achieved through regular training. This leads to hypertrophy of the areas of the brain that are responsible for “perseverance”. As a result, demands are not only perceived as subjectively less intense, but unusually intense stress can also be sustained more easily and for a longer period of time.

This principle also applies to athletes who are already used to pushing through, as the Phantom Training Mask provides stimuli from a completely different direction than previous athletic training.

The improved resistance to fatigue on a psychophysical level also enables increased focus and concentration, even in phases of physical exhaustion. This ensures a more economical running technique, which reduces overall energy expenditure and maintains performance for longer. In addition, the risk of injuries resulting from carelessness, such as twisting an ankle or similar, is reduced.
